The House of the Seven Gables (1940)

“An Ancient House! A Murder Secret! A Hidden Treasure!” Before he lived in the House of Wax, House on Haunted Hill and House of Usher, Vincent Price (as “Clifford Pyncheon”) resided in the ancestral 19th-century Massachusetts house made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic 1851 novel of the same name. George Sanders portrays the evil “Jaffrey Pyncheon.” Warning: Price actually attempts to sing a tune in this one. Directed by Joe May (The Invisible Man Returns) and adapted for the screen by Lester Cole (a member of the “Hollywood Ten”), The House of the Seven Gables also features Margaret Lindsay as “Hepzibah Pyncheon,” Dick Foran as “Matthew Maule,” Nan Grey as “Phoebe Pyncheon” and Gilbert Emery as “Gerald Pyncheon.” Born Joseph Otto Mandel in Vienna, Austria, May was one of the pioneers of German cinema and directed the classic silent drama Asphalt (1929).
