“America’s No. 1 Favorites – Funnier than Ever on the Screen!” Basically an extended skit from the I Love Lucy TV show with the main difference being that it’s a road movie and Lucille Ball portrays “Tacy,” while Desi Arnaz is “Nicky.” Directed by Vincente Minnelli and filmed in Technicolor, the often hilarious comedy features the couple as newlyweds who purchase a 40-foot trailer and embark on a series of misadventures on the honeymoon from hell. The trailer itself is a total monstrosity and a money pit to boot as the unfortunate couple maneuvers disastrously through the Sierra Nevada mountains. My favorite scene is when the couple rather foolishly decides to take the trailer on the steep, winding road up to Mount Whitney. In another classic scene, Tacy bounces around the trailer trying to cook dinner and trashing the whole place in the process, while Nicky drives along, singing a tune, totally oblivious to the crisis. The cast also includes Marjorie Main, Keenan Wynn, Bert Freed and Moroni Olsen. The Long, Long Trailer was based on a 1951 novel of the same name by Clinton “Buddy” Twiss and proved a big hit at the box office. Ball and Arnaz, who were married between 1940 and 1960, appeared in just two other films together: Too Many Girls (1940) and Forever, Darling (1956). Bottom line: The Long, Long Trailer is a fun-filled romp full of slapstick comedy and some beautiful scenery (including some nice shots of Yosemite National Park) – a nice mindless diversion! The trailer used in the film was reportedly a 36-foot-long 1953 Redman’s New Moon model – “Learn how you too can enjoy Carefree Living … at a new low cost.”
