Best in Show (2000)

“Some pets deserve a little more respect than others.” Another great, frequently hilarious mockumentary from Christopher Guest, Best in Show follows the outrageous antics of several dog lovers as they prepare to enter their pampered pets in the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show in Philadelphia. The entrants include Norwich Terrier “Winky” and owners “Gerry and Cookie Fleck” (Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara), who end up residing in the hotel’s storage room after their credit card is declined; Weimaraner “Beatrice” with obnoxious yuppie owners “Meg and Hamilton Swan” (Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock), who are obsessed with a bee-shaped dog toy; Bloodhound “Hubert” with owner “Harlan Pepper” (Guest), a simple-minded hillbilly and amateur ventriloquist; Poodle “Butch” with owner “Sherri Ann” (Jennifer Coolidge) and trainer “Christy Cummings” (Jane Lynch), who are carrying on an intimate relationship behind the back of elderly sugar daddy “Leslie” (Patrick Cranshaw); and Shih Tzu “Miss Agnes” with flamboyant owner “Scott Donlan” (John Michael Higgins) and his partner “Stefan Vanderhoof” (Michael McKean). If you appreciate the humor of Waiting for Guffman (1996), which features much of the same cast, than you will absolutely enjoy this absurd romp. The cast includes Fred Willard clueless dog show commentator “Buck Laughlin,” as well as Larry Miller, Ed Begley Jr. and Bob Balaban. However, if this type of humor ain’t your cup of tea, I suggest you stay the hell away from this one! The 2003 mockumentary A Mighty Wind would reunite much of the same cast, including Levy, O’Hara, McKean, Willard, Balaban, Coolidge, Hitchcock, Higgins, Begley Jr., Lynch and Posey.
