I remember the day when music history was made on August 1, 1981 and an Apollo astronaut proudly planted the MTV flag on the Moon. I still recall not only the original music video to air that day (The Buggles' Video Killed the Radio Star, of course) but also the SECOND music video ever played on MTV (Pat Benatar, You Better Run for you trivia geeks). I can rattle off the list of the original five MTV VJs - Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, Martha Quinn and the late, great J.J. Jackson. It seems like yesterday when Gary Numan's "Cars" was considered the cutting edge of "techno rock." I sat there glued to the TV set watching a fucked-up David Lee Roth hit on Martha Quinn on New Year's Eve, 1984. I could go on and on...
Alternative Reel is dedicated to all of those early MTV addicts who remember when the channel actually played music videos 24/7, who became violently ill when MTV programming was taken over with dreck like "Remote Control" and "Road Rules," who can still distinguish Men Without Hats' "Safety Dance" from Men at Work's "Overkill." However, Reel Reviews isn't just about nostalgia - we cover the full gamut of music videos, from Devo's "Whip It" to Weird Al Yankovic's "White and Nerdy" and everything in between such as classic music videos Eddie Grant, Adam Ant, Phil Collins, Quiet Riot, Madonna, Night Ranger, Oingo Boingo, Falco, Beastie Boys, Metallica, Poison, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, 2 Live Crew, Public Enemy, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, No Doubt, Foo Fighters, Fiona Apple, Staind, Pantera, Eminem, Fountains of Wayne, Breaking Benjamin, Nickelback, OutKast and much more!
And now for the first time anywhere online, Alternative Reel not only enables you to check out your favorite music videos but also rate the videos, read the reviews, leave your comments and even check out amateur versions of each song!
