Vachon was one of 13 children who grew up in Montreal and became one of Canada's premier amateur wrestlers, representing the country in the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. After joining the professional wrestling circuit in 1954, the 5'9" Vachon took to the road and evolved into a legendary heel for the American Wrestling Association (AWA). Vachon defeated Verne Gagne in 1964 to capture the AWA World Heavyweight Title for the first time and later won several AWA World Tag Team Titles with his brother, Paul a.k.a. "Butcher" (Vachon's sister, Vivian, was a popular professional wrestler as well). Tragically, Vachon was hit by a car in 1987 and had to have his leg amputated. While viewing a WWF match in 1996, Vachon had his artificial leg ripped off by Diesel, who used it as a weapon against his opponent, Shawn Michaels, during a No Holds Barred Match. Michaels eventually won the match.

Met the Mad Dog several years ago while he was doing shows in Brainerd, MN. He did an appearance for a car dealer friend of mine and was great! The Big K also made an appearance and so did Jim Brunzell. Later that night we went to a wrestling car in nearby Pequot Lakes. The Big K ran the show and let me watch him set it up in the locker room. He asked me after he put it together, "I'll be you didn't think it worked like this!" I told him, "yeah I did, but it was pretty interesting anyway." Mad Dog signed autographs and was outstanding with the kids.

Met Mr Vachon in Waikiki we stayed at the same hotel (Edgewater) for a few years. Played crib every evening until around midnight. My wife Jackie and I visited him in Quebec in september 1999 and stayed a week traveling around canada with Maurice. Met Paul also a fine man the Vachons are truly a quality family. We attended a legend show with maurice and met Killer Kilowsky another fine gentleman nothing like the image when wrestling. Maurice is a quality person a gentleman always.
